U-Pick Cultural Methods at Enoch's Berry Farm
We hope that you will value the special quality of our berries that results from our health conscious growing methods. We encourage everyone to eat the fruit right off the bush. When you taste the berries, you will know which are the ripe ones that you want to take home and which ones need a bit more time on the bush. No pesticides are sprayed on the berries. We fertilize with mulch, compost and organic approved amendments. We do not use chemical fertilizers. We spray the berry plants with mineral fungicides in the winter when the plants are dormant. We use Lime-Sulphur and Copper. These mineral based sprays have been used for many decades on fruit producing plants. Calcium, Sulphur, and Copper are also vital plant nutrients. At the same time that these substances are suppressing fungal growth, they are also providing trace elements to nourish the plant. We do not spray any herbicides on the farm. Where we have problems with persistent weeds and brush, such as poison ivy, we wipe or paint the herbicide right on the plant we want to control. We avoid getting any herbicide on the soil if possible. Fire ants have become a fact of life for farming operations in our part of the country. They love the berry farm with all the mowed walkways. We combat the ants in the grassy areas with Amdro insecticide bait. Amdro is not organic approved. The product that we use is approved for pasture and range land. When we have an insect problem such as wasp, yellow jacket, or bumble bee nests, we use an organic approved insecticide. | |||||||||
